Out of Reach explores the long-distance relationships between families and friends for immigrants and newcomers. Being a newcomer myself in Canada, most of my family and friends are 6,530 miles away from where Iām settling in. We can only connect through facetime, instant messaging tools and letters. The yearning to touch motivates me to create this project.
The objects shown in the photographs are all the gifts that sent to me by my families and friends back in Hong Kong. Since I could not thank, hug and kiss them in person, I chose to touch them to express gratitude and connect with them despite miles apart.
This project was completed during the photography program at JAYU in 2023, mentored by Sanjeev Kugan and Shane Ravel. It was exhibited at the Toronto Public Library (Steeles Branch).
